Behind the Lens: A Gentle Pause

Some photographs are captured in a fraction of a second. This one took much longer.

We had been watching a black bear sow whose cub had climbed high into a tree for safety. She wasn’t concerned. She simply settled beneath the tree and waited.

And waited.

For the longest time she slept in the shade while her cub remained overhead. There wasn’t much to photograph. No action. No drama. Just a sleeping bear.

It would have been easy to move on.

As wildlife photographers, we’re always tempted to look for the next opportunity. But over the years I’ve learned that nature doesn’t work on our schedule. Sometimes the best decision isn’t to go searching for something else. Sometimes it’s to stay put and trust that the story isn’t over.

Eventually she woke, stretched, and slowly climbed onto a nearby rock. She looked out across the landscape for only a few moments before continuing on.

That was the moment.

Had we given up while she slept beneath the tree, this image would never have existed.

Photography has taught me that patience is more than simply waiting. It’s believing that something worth seeing may still be just ahead. Whether it’s in the field, in life, or in pursuing a dream, not every meaningful moment arrives on our timeline.

Sometimes the reward comes to those willing to pause.

Sometimes, all that’s required is A Gentle Pause.
